FULL BODY CHARACTER | DEVIL JIN | TEKKEN 8
early stages - blocking out shapes, working on the body muscles
This is my first sculpt of a full body character. I got to experiment a little with simple shapes before, but I'm always up for a challenge, so I hopped into making a full character directly.
I followed two different courses, my usual game art ones and the 3D sculpting ones, because I was really interested in knowing the whole process. It was an intense week, as I'd often start early and finish very late, but I'd do it again if given the chance.
I had to go through a lot of refining, and also created my own chain brush so I didn't have to go through the fastidious process of sculpting them by hand.
This project was a huge game changer for me. It helped me understand a lot that I didn't know about volumes, anatomy, and so on. Sculpting is, in my opinion, a very great tool to improve your 2D art.
The reference gathering process is part of the improvement; Working around references and understanding them instead of simply copying them, like some would on a 2D canvas, really changes your point of view.
