ROCKSTAR EZREAL | LEAGUE OF LEGENDS
This custom skin was done for the modding month of my school, in November 2024.
The directives were to create a concept for a mod in any game we wanted during the entire month of November.
Initially, our only work was the concept art, and we were required to only do it in 2D. But I wanted to go further, as I always love a challenge.
I went ahead and picked up Ezreal's model from the game files, and edited the mesh in Maya, while being very careful not to break it. I helped myself with tutorials, online documentation, and it was an amazing occasion for me to discover Maya as a whole.
I had to touch everything; Modelling, UV mapping, skinning... The process was quite daunting at times, but through research I could pull through.
This was the concept for the skin. Nothing too difficult, as I was already imagining the struggle it could be to reproduce the exact same details on the 3D model.
Some of my initial details didn't stay, such as the glasses shape or floating stripped belt. They were too hard to implement without completely breaking the model, and I wanted to be efficient and finish the skin in one month.
In the end, I realized this ended up being more of a texture work than modelling work. However, it helped me study Riot's way of drawing textures and how they blend in so perfectly with the maps and general skin.
The texturing part was without a doubt my favorite, with the UV mapping. It felt really gratifying being able to edit textures as I wished on UVs I spent time slicing properly.
The UV map looks a bit messy here, because I added meshes, such as the vest collar that replaces the usual fur Ez has on his coat.
My way of texturing probably wasn't optimal though, and when I make a skin again, I'll totally change how I did it.
I initially just took the texture map, and drew on it on my drawing software, then saved the file to update it on Maya. The changes weren't live, so I had to come back and tweak things that didn't look good. It was a great way to train my eye to unwrapped UVs, though.
My first time making a splash art for an actual skin. I tried to paint it in Riot fashion, though I felt a bit unsatisfied with it.
